FIFA World Cup Men’s football tournaments have many fascinating stories to tell. Whether the fact is about the teams, number of teams, players who scored the most, players who although didn’t score well but were hard to contain by the opponents giving them a tough fight, and so forth.
Great Goal Scorers at the World Cup Competitions
The world cannot forget Just Louis Fontaine, a French ex-footballer. He is best known for scoring the most goals in a single edition of the FIFA World Cup, with 13 goals in six matches in the year 1958 in Sweden (a record which could still not be breached). The most of the goals were from open play. Pelé named him in 2004 as one of the 125 Greatest Living Footballers.
Louis Fontaine started his feat with a hat-trick against Paraguay, followed by 2 goals each against Yugoslavia and Northern Ireland. This was followed by goal each against Scotland and Brazil.
Then came his exemplary performance in a third-place play-off match against Germany. He improved upon all his past feats. He badly beaten the German goalkeeper Heinrich “Heinz” Kwiatkowski four times. His high-level performance in this electrified battle resulted in France winning the third place 6-3 defeating Germany.
Sándor Kocsis is a former Hungarian football player. He had to his credit a national record of 7 hat-tricks playing for Hungary, which included a four-goal scored against West Germany at the 1954 World Cup.[Tribute to his performance as a footballer, whose life was full of suffering and pain and he died at the age of 49 falling from a balcony, and at that time he was suffering from leukemia and stomach cancer.
Gerd Müller was a German professional footballer. He was known for his clinical finishing, especially in areas near the goal post. People know him as one of the greatest goal scorer in the history of the sports. He scored 68 goals in 62 career international matches, which is a remarkable achievement. He was named European Footballer of the Year in 1970.
Müller scored 10 goals in the final rounds of the 1970 World Cup, which was the more than any other player’s score in that tournament. In the 1974 World Cup final, he scored the deciding goal in West Germany’s 2–1 win against the Netherlands. He abruptly retired from international events after at age 28 after the World Cup title. He died in 2021.
Eusébio da Silva Ferreira was a Portuguese footballer and is considered one of the greatest players of all times. He played as a striker. He helped Portugal win the third place in the 1966 FIFA. He scored 9 goals and became the top scorer in that competition. Pele named Eusébio as one of the 125 best living footballers in his 2004 FIFA 100 list. He died in 2014 at the age of 71.
